The Music Business for the Beginner
Let’s say you are a singer or a guitarist and you want to step into the realm of the music business. You want to get your music known in your area or even your country. But how are you going to go about it, because things are changing in the music industry at a rapid pace.
You have heard about the cheap easy downloads people can do with recordings and that the music industry is in trouble with too many illegal downloads. Just the very of thought of the free or illegal downloads is enough to discourage the aspiring musician from trying to further a budding music career. Television and radio play merely a fraction of upcoming a new artists and rarely give airtime to a new artist.
Not only that, once a musician signs a contract with a big record label they are under a lot of pressure to sell millions of copies in order to remain under contract. If they don’t get that certain quota of recordings sold, they could be in trouble with staying signed on with the record label. Look at some of the recent American Idol stars who recently lost their recording contracts yet millions of people voted for them in the competition.
What can you do as an artist who wants to make a living with music? Well, there are a couple of things if you have that independent streak and are somewhat entrepreneurial. Besides being a talented musician start getting educated about business by taking some classes if you must.
What you can do is start your own record label, and keep most of the profits. If you are just starting out in learning about recording your songs, think of developing a following through live performances. This can be through media such as YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, and so on.
Millions of people view videos and if they like what they see and hear, you could be sitting on a goldmine. Even if you get several thousand listeners you will get exposure that you would not have had otherwise. This could mean that people will buy your recording in the future as you developed a following because they will know your name.
Get creative with your ideas about promoting yourself. For example, start an ezine about music happenings in your niche or area and mention your music or your group’s music in it. Let them know when and where you’ll be performing in the next few days or months.
Make friends with people in the business if you can. Get their honest opinion of your music and recordings and if there is room for improvement. Last of all, don’t give up as the music industry is changing you can get your name out there and make money for doing something you love to do.
