Learning to play guitar but don’t know where to start? You have always wanted to play guitar, but don’t know what kind of guitar to buy and how much you should pay for it. First of all, don’t listen to everyone’s opinions about what you should, so do your research about guitars.
What kind of guitar music are you interested in playing? Do you like classical, rock, folk, bluegrass, jazz or blues music? Answer these questions first then decide what type of guitar you should choose to purchase. The prices for a new guitar can range from around $100.00 to over $300.00 for a good quality guitar. Steel stringed guitars are all around best for these styles of music.
There are basically two types of guitars: acoustic and electric guitars. The acoustic guitar does not use an amplifier as it is just a basic guitar with steel or nylon strings and wooden body. There is a larger form of acoustic guitar that is good for new students because it has a larger neck to make fingering on the frets easier.
When you look at a new acoustic guitar, check out the wood to make sure it is smooth with no marks or chips. If you are looking for a guitar for a younger child there are smaller size guitars available in ½ and ¾ size, and nylon strings are easier for the fingers to play. There are great brands for guitars, but Yamaha come highly recommended for children.
Electric guitars are smaller and easier to handle and usually come equipped with steel strings. These instruments need amplification so you will need to purchase an amplifier also. Many music stores online and offline offer great deals and occasional sales on electric guitars and amps, so look out for them in your local newspaper or do some good online searching for good deals.
Your local music store often has frequent sales on instruments like guitars or pianos to move the inventory, so keep checking your local newspaper for ads. Also, many music stores have instruments for sale by owners who want to sell their instruments. I do not recommend buying a used or even gently used guitar online as you need to physically view the guitar and possibly play if you already know how to play.
Strum the instrument and listen to its sound quality. Does it resonate and sound good? Don’t base your choice of guitar and only how good it looks, as you will be playing the instrument also. Learning to play the guitar takes some research but you will be glad you did it.
Last, check through your daily newspaper or local college classifieds as people often need to sell guitars they no longer use to raise money. If you don’t know much about what to look for in a guitar, don’t take the risk to buy something that is poor quality. It is better to purchase new or used from a music store that will offer a guarantee for a limited time. But you can still buy a guitar online from a reputable online store that sells Yamaha or other top brand names and that offer a guarantee in a shopping verified site.
