How Much Should I Practice My Instrument?

You have signed up for an online music course or private lessons with an instructor.   You have never studied a musical instrument before or you have had some limited experience with music lessons years ago. Whatever the case may be, you know that you have to practice your new instrument.

Almost everyone has heard of the stereotyped saying that musicians must practice an hour day.  Just mentioning those words get people irritated and angry as practicing as viewed as not a fun thing to do.  Some people immediately start complaining about back problems sitting down and practicing, as it is a very tedious and boring activity.

Another old saying ‘Practice makes Perfect’ gets many people thinking that they have to match an unreachable ideal of perfection.  The thought is that if you just practice your instrument, you will have it made as a professional.  Many beginning musicians hold those thoughts as they start a new instrument.

Most music teachers would agree is that the practice time allotted  should be set aside ideally at a daily basis.  Most students have very little time to set aside for practicing their instrument.  They need to make the commitment to practice, even if it is not every day.

Before signing up for lessons or before starting an online lesson course, the new student should set up small goals.  What do you as the new music student want to accomplish?  How can you go about achieving your goals?

Develop an action plan and stick to it.  Yes, you’ll have some discouraging times and you may feel that you’ll never get there.  You may feel you don’t have the talent, the time or the stamina to practice and feel frustrated.

If you’re taking lessons with a teacher, set up a plan and talk to them about your goals.  Or if you are taking an online course, the course should have a built in lesson plan that sets goals for you.  Do the best you can, and if you can’t get your goals done every week, just revise them for the next day.

Last, remember that it is how you utilize your practice time that will determine your level of  success.  If you waste minutes during your practice time, you will find that it will put you more behind your goals.  Get some strong discipline going, stay positive, and try to apply yourself to a regular practice schedule.
